Review : Philips DPM8000 Digital Pocket Memo

Philips DPM8000 Digital Pocket Memo

The Philips 9600 Digital Pocket Memo has been Philips’ top of the line digital dictation recorder for a number of years now and, despite newer releases from competitive brands, has remained our favourite option when all factors (functionality, ease of use, ergonomics, bundled software, etc.) are considered.

However, when compared to some of these newer models (such as the Olympus DS-7000), cosmetically, the Philips DPM range was beginning to look and feel a little dated.

Introducing the new Philips DPM8000

We have recently seen some new dictation recorders released by competitive brands. They are good, but to be honest nothing really new or exciting…

We kind of expected the Philips launch to be much of the same….

… We were wrong!

The Design

Philips has always produced attractive recorders – even their old mini cassette recorders were usually sleeker than the competition – but the Philips DPM8000 has taken design to a whole new level.

Brushed Stainless Steel

The stainless steel housing not only looks fantastic, but creates a highly robust and durable protective shell around the device.

Ergonomic

The ergonomic design fits perfectly into the hand. The DPM8000 is not only the thinnest dictation recorder in its class, but also one of the lightest.

Large Colour LCD

The most obvious change is the recorder’s screen. The DPM8000 now boasts the largest LCD for a digital dictation recorder. It is 40% larger than its predecessor, has 262,000 colours and 98% more pixels.  Basically, this translates into a large, full colour, high-resolution display.

Not satisfied with just looking good, the display is customisable so it can show all the information that is relevant to you.

Build Quality

2 Year Warranty

Philips are renowned for producing high end products.  So confident are they with the quality of the new DPM8000, they now offer a global 2 year replacement warranty

Wear Free Slide Switch

The main function switch on the Philips DPM8000 is the slide switch which allows you to control all the main operations of dictation – recorder, play, rewind & stop / pause.  This piece does 95% of the work – and in the past.. the first part to wear.  Not any more…
The Philips DPM8000 now features a “wear free” slide control operates with light sensors, making it wear-free and extremely durable for usage on a daily basis.  The switch lasts more than 4 million operation cycles – several times more than its closest competitor.

Standard Micro USB

Micro USB connection is now considered the industry standard for portable devices.  Many mobile phones, memory devices etc use micro USB cables for connection.  The DPM8000 has taken this into account and incorporated the micro USB connection into the design.

Product Benefits

3d Microphone

The most apparent new feature of the Philips DPM8000 is the 3D Microphone.  This guarantees the highest quality audio at all times – regardless of whether you are recording a dictation or meeting.

The unit can switch between “Dictation Mode” (which features directional microphone pick up) and also “Conference Mode” (which provides 360° pick up).  These modes can be set to automatically be detected by the position of the recorder (via the built in motion sensor).

The quality of the microphone is so great it has been awarded the highest “Dragon Score” by Nuance – 6 Star Dragon Rating.  Simply put… the best microphone for use with speech recognition.

Motion Sensor

The smartest feature on the Philips DPM8000 is the motion sensor.  This provides various benefits.

It senses when the dictation recorder is placed on the desk or in the hand.  When placed on the desk in the “stop” position the recorder will automatically go into standby mode – thus preserving battery.  The motion sensor then automatically activates the recorder – from standby to full operation in less than a second.

The microphone in the DPM8000 will automatically switch from “Dictation Mode” when in the hand – to “Conference Mode” when laid on a table.  Alternatively, this option can be turned off and microphone selection can be made manual.

Classic Mode

We love this one!

This feature on the surface gives the unit a great “retro” feel… But upon further investigation – it is much more than that.  Classic Mode transforms the Philips DPM8000 into a device with the look and feel of a traditional analogue device – all whilst keeping the advanced functionality of a high-end digital dictation recorder.

The Classic Mode view focuses on essential information for the author.  The classic “analogue tape” display features an “LED” type based volume level bars and the “LCD” area provides key information regarding the recording number and “tape counter”.

The turning “tape” wheels act as a status indicator – so the author can see easily if they are in play, rewind and record.

The Classic Mode makes the Philips DPM8000 simply one of the easiest dictation recorders to use and is the ideal device for users that are switching from analogue tape dictation to digital dictation

Energy Efficient

The Philips DPM8000 boasts the largest battery capacity and most energy efficient architecture to provide the user with huge battery life – up to 200 days in standby mode and 23 hours in continuous record… That’s 20% longer than its competitors

The automatic backlight adjustment with built in illumination sensor allows the machine to draw as little power as possible from the battery for the backlight – ensuring that the battery is reserved for dictation.

Advanced Docking Station

The docking station that is included with the new Philips DPM8000 is a huge improvement than the one included with it’s predecessor – LFH9600.  The unit is much more solid and robust and is +43% heavier than the older design (meaning it will stay put on your desk when you are connecting and disconnection the dictation recorder!).

The new and improved connection socket has been designed the provide the best in electro-static protection and is more flexible – which will prevent less wear and tear.

The biggest improvement however is the incorporation for the user to connect an optional foot control.  The foot control can be used for hands free recording (ideal for things like microscope operation for pathologists) or for PC-Free Transcription.  This is ideal for users who do not want to, or are unable to, install the required transcription software on their PC.

High Data Security

We often go to extreme lengths to protect our data, but astonishingly a very high percentage of users do not protect the recordings they make on the digital voice recorders.

The Philips DPM8000 offers two different types of protection;

  • Device Protection via PIN code – This is conveniently entered via the slide switch, or via automatic Author Login with the PIN Code Table – ideal for devices with multiple users.
  • 256bit DSS Pro Real Time File Encryption (Note: the AES standard in real time is used to encrypt highly classified government information.  Even Philips cannot decrypt these files!)

Remote Configuration & Maintenance

When you have multiple devices within your firm the rollout, configuration and administration can be time consuming.

The Philips Remote Device Configuration software was previously only available for larger sites using SpeechExec Enterprise.  Now this time saving tool is available as a free download (for site with less than 10 devices).

Remote Device Configuration allows you to manage a wide range of Philips dictation devices (such as SpeechMikes, Philips USB Foot Controls & Digital Pocket Memo’s) – remotely.  You can manage settings for individual users, groups / teams or your whole firm, perform device upgrades and more.

Integrated Barcode Scanner (DPM8500)

The Philips DPM8000 is also available as DPM8500 which features an integrated barcode scanner.
The compact, on-board barcode scanner is a reliable way to link patient ID (or client information) to records for faster workflow routing and quality assurance.  Scan a range of barcode formats from paper, screen or monitor.

Coming Soon…. WLAN Adaptor

One of the most common requests we receive is for a device that can transfer dictations into the system wirelessly.

Whilst it is not available…. Yet… Philips are once again taking the lead by advising us that they will be addressing this need in late 2013.

The Philips Wireless LAN Adaptor for the DPM8000 will be ideal for clinic, hospitals and larger corporations than need an easy solution for uploading dictations without a PC.  This solution can significantly reduce the total cost of IT and will allow browser based configuration and central administration for remote installation.

Software

Just as with all Philips Dictation devices, the DPM8000 is designed to work with the Philips SpeechExec Pro and Philips SpeechExec Enterprise Dictation Management Software.  In addition, the DPM8000 is also compatible with a wide range of 3rd party software providers, such as; Bighand & Winscribe.

The Philips DPM8000 is compatible for use in a wide variety of IT environments, including both Windows and Mac systems and also Citrix* and Terminal Server / RDC* (when used in conjunction with SpeechExec Enterprise.
